What Is Pyrolysis?

Pyrolysis is an ancient industrial production technology, originally used in the dry distillation of coal, with the resulting coke primarily used as fuel in iron and steel smelting. With the development of modern industry, the application of this technology has gradually expanded, now being used for the gasification of heavy oil and coal.

pro_icon.pngWhat Are the Uses of Pyrolysis?

The purpose of pyrolysis is to recover resources from waste, not just to destroy it. The process produces a variety of products, such as pyrolysis oil (which can be used as dyes or for further refining), syngas (from a recyclable reheat pyrolysis machine), and solid byproducts such as carbon black (used in the manufacture of rubber, plastics, and inks). For waste tires, pyrolysis can also recover the steel wires embedded in the tires.

pro_icon.pngPyrolysis Technology Has the Following Characteristics:

  • Organic matter in solid waste can be converted into storage energy sources, mainly fuel gas, fuel oil, and carbon black.
  • Because it involves anaerobic decomposition, the exhaust volume is small, which helps reduce secondary pollution to the atmospheric environment.
  • Most of the harmful components in the waste, such as sulfur and heavy metals, are fixed in carbon black.
  • The tar produced during pyrolysis can easily adhere to the pipelines, affecting production stability.

pro_icon.pngWhat Is the Difference Between Pyrolysis and Incineration?

  • The two reflect different essences.

Pyrolysis is the process by which a substance decomposes under anaerobic or oxygen-deficient conditions through high temperatures. It is a decomposition reaction.

Incineration is a redox reaction that occurs in the presence of oxygen.

  • The substances produced by the two are different.

The products of organic matter pyrolysis include a mixture of combustible gases, tar, and coke.

The products of organic matter incineration are generally carbon dioxide, water, and fly ash.

  • The two produce pollutants with different levels of pollution.

Because pyrolysis produces relatively little flue gas, it generates only dioxins and fly ash pollutants, but produces a large amount of VOCs pollutants.

Because incineration produces a large volume of flue gas, it generates more dioxins, nitrogen oxides, and fly ash pollutants, while producing fewer VOCs pollutants.

  • Preprocessing

The raw materials need to be dried and pulverized. Drying requires controlling the moisture content to below 10% to improve the viscosity, pH value, and storage stability of the bio-oil; pulverization to a suitable particle size enhances heat transfer efficiency. Cleaning or catalytic additives may be introduced in some processes to regulate product composition.

  • pyrolysis reaction

The pyrolysis process requires high heating rates, efficient heat transfer, precise temperature control, and rapid cooling of volatiles to maximize the yield of liquid products. The reaction apparatus must ensure that the pyrolysis vapors have an extremely short residence time in the high-temperature zone to suppress secondary pyrolysis.

  • Product separation

The pyrolysis products undergo gas-solid separation to remove coke particles and ash, preventing them from adversely affecting the stability of the bio-oil and preventing catalytic side reactions during subsequent condensation. The bio-oil is rapidly cooled and collected using a condenser, while non-condensable gases are recycled separately.
